CECC Texas 2024 Day 2 Recap

Updated @ 11:03am cdt with Aurora Series

Day 2 has come and gone and the Esports Arena in Arlington was rockin’ with collegiate and scholastic gameplay.

Vanta held their Texas Championships this weekend amongst the collegiate Championships with middle school and high school players joining the ranks of the upper echelon of athletes. Students were featured on one of the side stages, getting a taste of the lights and sounds of the upper level of esports.

ROCKET LEAGUE

Rocket League were the first to solidify their final brackets, and Ball State University were the talk of the town. They swept Maryville University 4-0, holding them to just one goal the whole series.

Ball State kept that momentum going into the semi-finals against Akron, not just sweeping them 4-0, but keeping them scoreless in the series.

Ball State takes on Boise State University in the Grand Finals later today.

OVERWATCH

Illinois State University if keeping their run of Championships going by making it to the Grand Finals last night with a win over Fisher College in a late wrap up match. ISU won NACE last weekend, can they make it two weeks of trophies in a row? They take on Northwood University this evening.

VALORANT

Valorant is the only game without a set Grand Finals as of this morning. At the moment, semi-finals are happening now between Winthrop & Saint Claire College (Canada) and Fisher College (White) and Blinn College.

SUPER SMASH BROTHERS

Probably the most exciting, and loudest, match ups yesterday came from Smash. An exciting Lower Bracket Semi-finals between University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) and Fisher College East. Large crowds followed the teams to see players like Beastly and Jackal. It came down to final sets with Fisher taking the win.

In the Lower Bracket Finals, Fisher took on Winthrop, led by Lima, who took 10 of Fisher’s stocks before finally losing his first three. It gave Winthrop the momentum to take out Fisher in quick fashion.

The Grand Finals between Winthrop and Fisher Northeast is currently underway, with Fisher getting the first win automatically for being undefeated, rather than a bracket reset.

AURORA SERIES

One of the features of the day included two teams from the Aurora Series. The Aurora Series is a Game Changers-esque tournament for women and marginalized gender collegiate squads, giving the teams a chance to represent their schools in a safe and welcoming environment.

The University of North Texas (UNT) and the University of Houston (UH) have been building up a rivalry in the series, and with UNT already in the CECC tournament, UH was invited to Arlington to allow the teams to play in a LAN setting, and show the rest of the CECC players and patrons the incredible gameplay of these two teams.

They started the day out playing two games off stage, where UH was up 2-0. When it came to mainstream play, UH was up 11-5, needing only two more wins to take the series, but UNT pushed back, bringing the score to 12-11 in favor of UH.

Houston would end up taking the win in the end, but UNT did their best to claw back and make for an exciting series.

Aurora Series co-founder Cora Kennedy was in disbelief that her years of hard work was finally being displayed among a national audience. Show host Herculyse surprised Cora by bringing her on stage to thank her for the work she has done to make the Aurora Series a success.
